La mort énigmatique de Willi Münzenberg – Une perspective locale

Cet article fait le point sur l’état des connaissances relatives aux circonstances de la mort de Willi Münzenberg, acteur majeur du communisme international dans l’entre-deux guerres. Ressortissant allemand réfugié politique en France depuis 1933, il est interné au camp de Chambaran en mai 1940. Le 20 juin, il fausse compagnie à ses gardiens lors de l’évacuation du camp. Quelques mois plus tard on retrouve le corps d’un homme apparemment mort par pendaison dans un bois du village de Montagne, près de Saint-Marcellin (Isère). Les autorités françaises déclarent qu’il s’agit de Münzenberg et concluent au suicide. Depuis, la disparition de Münzenberg a fait l’objet d’investigations diverses et la thèse de l’assassinat politique semble aujourd’hui s’imposer. Cependant, l’étude les témoignages dans leur forme originaire et la prise en compte du contexte local de l’époque montrent que l’étroit socle des faits avérés ne permet pas à ce jour de dépasser le stade des hypothèses.
Willi Münzenberg’s mysterious death – A local perspective
This article reports on the state of knowledge of the circumstances of Willy Munzenberg’s death. Münzenberg played a major role in international communism in the interwar. Living in France since 1933 as a German political refugee, he was interned in the camp of Chambaran in May 1940. On June 20, he fled during the camp evacuation. A few months later the body of a man apparently dead by hanging was found in a wood of the French village of Montagne, near Saint-Marcellin (Isère). The French authorities declared that the body was Münzenberg’s and concluded to death by suicide. Since then, many investigations have been carried out on the end of Münzenberg and the thesis of political assassination is now prevailing. However, the original testimonies and the local context of the time show that nothing but assumptions can be deducted from the narrow basis of established facts.
